![]() Wisconsin allowed just 2.12 yards per carry in 2021, tops in the country and best by an FBS defense since 2016. Led by Big Ten Linebacker of the Year Leo Chenal, Wisconsin set a school record by allowing just 64.8 yards per game on the ground, becoming just the second FBS team since 2008 to allow fewer than 70.0 rushing yards per game over an entire season. It was the fewest yards allowed by an FBS team since 2011. Wisconsin allowed just 239.1 yards per game, the third-best mark in school history and the lowest total at Wisconsin since 1954. In 2021, Leonhard's Badgers defense reached a new level of dominance. As interim head coach, Leonhard guided UW to a 4-3 record, propelling the Badgers to a bowl-eligible 6-6 regular-season record. Leonhard became a defensive coordinator less than a year after starting his coaching career and went on to be named a finalist for the Broyles Award, presented to the nation's top assistant coach, in his first season running Wisconsin's defense in 2017. A 2015 inductee to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, Leonhard's long list of accolades includes being a three-time first-team All-American, three-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, two-time Academic All-American, and two-time team captain. He started his coaching career at Wisconsin in 2016 after a 10-year NFL career and one of the most successful playing careers in Wisconsin history. Leonhard spent six seasons as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator from 2017-22, including last year while serving as interim head coach. Leonhard joins the Illini from Wisconsin, where he spent the last seven seasons on staff, including serving as interim head coach for seven games in 2022.
